Cappadocia, with its deep valleys and soaring rock cones was formed by the action of wind and rain eating away at the lava spewed out from the Erciyes volcano. Fairy chimneys, columns of rock up to 50 m high, shaped like spears and topped off with hats of harder rock - the locals called them fairy chimneys because they thought that only fairies could have created structures. Later, human beings came along and hollowed out the insides of the chimneys to create churches and chapels with colorful frescoes, as well as monasteries, tombs and pigeon houses.
